Saturday 6th August – Sunday 14th August

I did not manage to complete a daily journal for the last week as I seemed to be too chilled and was enjoying relaxing.  So a lot happened in those last few days which I will now recant.

Saturday 6th August – Pontorson

We had lovely quiet afternoon and evening yesterday that we decided to stay another night.  However we seem to have got ourselves dough nutted by a noisy Belgium family (with dog) on our right and a French one opposite.  However The Boys proved themselves worthy and really were quiet. Thursday 4th August to Saturday 6th August – Saint Piere en Retz to Pontorson, Basse-Normandie, Manche (50)

We left the farm buying some fresh eggs on the way from our host Annie.  Yet another lovely drive but with spits of rain on the windscreen future weather did not seem great and this dampered our mood rather.  We passed through pretty towns and villages, across bridges smothered in flowers and boats passing along the rivers.

Wednesday 3rd August,  Chuce to Saint Pere en Retz, Loire Atlantique (44)

One of todays jobs was to pop into an Aire to dispose of our unwanted waste water (black and grey) and to top up with fresh water and fuel too.  This we managed just outside Cholet and was part of a bus depot but next to a SuperU. Aires are fantastic places situated all over France enabling travellers to keep going off grid for longer.

Tuesday 2nd August, Chuce to Sainte Crespin sur Moine, Maine et Loire (49)

The Boys chased the hares around the vineyard this morning while K packed up after breakfast.  We said our farewells to Patricia having spent a very pleasant evening and quiet night with the village bells sounding softly in the distant background.

We stopped off in Saumur leaving the The Boys in their new slightly smaller cave inside Zygie.  We walked up the steep winding narrow street to see the Chateau at the top. Looking across the wide open land beyond with the beautiful old town beneath the Chateau had been well chosen as an advantage point.

We descended later straight into a small restaurant – a beer was calling.  It is really fun to people watch in another country, their manner, their ways are very much different to ours and we smiled to ourselves while supping beers and eating Croque Monsieur’s.

Saumur is a nice place and had a warm appeal about it and we both felt as we left the carpark that we will return on another occasion.

Finally driving onto the land by a lake with vineyards all around we knew we had made another good choice with this evening France Passion site.  Gaetan, the owner, welcomed us both just as we got out.  Guess what – another wine tasting in 15 minutes times and yes we could bring The Boys too. A splendid couple of hours was spent chatting to our amiable host in a mixture of French and English at the end we came away with a free bottle and 3 cases of wine to collect in the morning. K won at Scrabble that night by one chuffing point!

The next morning saw The Boys watching the jumping fish in the lake while we ate our breakfast.

Monday 1st August, Le mans to Chace, Maine-et-Loire (49)

Today we actually found ourselves, for part of the route West, on the Le Mans circuit. Plenty of Armco and loads of motor racing signs advertising fuel and oil funnelled our journey.  At a junction we were faced with turning into the Le Mans Museum or going West. Quick discussion at the lights and straight into the Museum carpark.  It has been on my bucket list to see Le Mans and this was a must not miss opportunity for me.  K thankfully chose to look after The Boys and do some school work.  Although a little bit like Beaulieu Car Museum in Hampshire. It was an interesting visit, especially getting up close to racing cars that I have only ever seen on Tv. No hindrance on photography either.

Shortly after restarting our journey K announced she thought it was time for her to have a go driving Zygie!  Changing places we were off again.  Without doubt she has no fear of driving Zygie and soon got the knack of driving a vehicle larger than her Mini.  Actually she told me after 30km or so that she found it quite hard to stay relaxed, but it did not show at all.  The only fright for us both was when a Buzzard lurched itself at the windscreen while passing through a forested area missing us by inches (cm)!

Tonight we stayed at a France Passion site for the first time.  These are friendly, free sites for camping cars in either vineyards, farms or places of artisan based people.  It is usual to purchase something when staying as is driving in and parking up following the signs. Being our first time I had forgotten this etiquette and went off looking for the owner!

However after we had sorted out our place for the night between the vines we later had our own personal wine tasting by Patricia, wife of the owner Patrick, in a nicely cooled cave.  We returned with our purchase cool wine smiling at each other, so much cheaper than in the Uk for better wine.  Later, as the sun was setting and an orange balloon sailed above us, we ate our anniversary steak and drank the vineyards bubbly, so quiet – bliss. The Boys just watched the chickens!
